About National Monument
The National Monument of Bangladesh is situated in Savar, an approximate 35 kilometer drive from the capital city Dhaka. The beautiful architectural structure is one of the best in the country and is dedicated to the sacred memory of the millions of known and unknown martyrs of the war of liberation in 1971.
A war against the Pakistani forces were held because they tried to take away our country. The devastation of the Pakistani army forced the Bangalis to take an attempt of saving it, hence, they formed their own army and commenced war against them. A long 9 month war was held against them which cost over 3 million lives and a lot of national devastation. The National Monument is built in the memory and respect of these lost souls.
The beautiful architectural structure is designed by architect Moinul Hossain who is still touted as one of the best in the country. The whole place is on an 108 acre land. The top peak of the monument is aboout 150 feet high and has a total of 7 triangular monuments. The whole place contains excellent manicured gardens along with hundreds of graves of unknown martyrs.
The National Monument is considered as one of the best tourist attractions of the country. The place is open seven days a week and it is busiest in the holidays. It has a food court right opposite of the monument main gate. In the events of Independence Day and Victory Day, special programs are held where general people and political leaders present to pay respect to the martyrs. The significance of this place is so vast that its picture is even used in the local currency of Bangladesh.
The National Monument is a symbol of respect the country shows for its martyrs and it also reminds everyone about the holy sacrifice they made to free this country. Therefore, it is a must visit place for every person who calls themself a Bangali. The place is also a very attracting place for any tourists around the globe.
